In the 2021 NFL season the New York Giants saw their 2021 Second Round Draft pick Azeez Ojulari set the most sacks in a season for any rookie in their franchises history. Well, Lawrence Taylor set the record back in 1981 with 9.5 sacks that season but the stat was not yet officially tracked.
The Giants have had a history of All-Time defenses. On those defenses having All-Time players. Taylor as mentioned before was an elite player and is arguably the G.O.A.T. Other players like Michael Strahan being another name that comes to mind when associating sacks with the Giants franchise.
Another name to add to the list could be Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Giants 5th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. In a meeting with the press he was asked if Ojulari and himself had any discussions on the sack record from the previous year. Thibodeaux stated, ” Definitely I told him yesterday in a meeting, everything he does I want to do it better. You know whether it’s eating, sleeping, or breathing I’m gonna try to do it better.“
He was then asked if he wanted the rookie record Thibodeaux responded, ” I mean, I wouldn’t not want it.”
How Likely is Thibodeaux to Set the Rookie Record
Thibodeaux has stated that during this years camp Giants Left Tackle Andrew Thomas has gotten the best of him. Thomas is a young skilled tackle and looks to make a large impact on the offensive line this year, something the Giants desperately have needed over the last couple of seasons.
How many Thomas level or better tackles will the Giants face this season? In the division they will face Cowboys Left Tackle Tyron Smith twice. They will also face the Eagles Left Tackle Jordan Mailata twice.
Outside of the division they will face the Lions Penei Sewell who has been battling in the trenches with the 2022 2nd overall pick Aidan Hutchinson. Green Bay Packers David Bakhtiari is on the schedule, as well as first-round pick Ikem Ekwonu of the Carolina Panthers. In week 10 of the season the Giants will face the Houston Texans who have Laremy Tunsil.
These players represent 8 games this season that the Left Tackle position will be occupied by someone who is as skilled as Thomas in the position if not better.
Thibodeaux has his work cut out for him. The Giants selected him 5th overall because of the potential he has to be a disrupting force in the NFL.
Nine sacks may not seem like many, but the competition he will be facing will be tough. I can not see him getting to nine sacks this season.
